Bee Honey

Ethiopia is the highest in Africa in bee colony population producing the highest amount of the continent’s honey with 43,000 tons registered per annum. Nevertheless, 80% of the honey is consumed locally with honey mead processing and the remaining eaten in different forms. The Ethiopian honey didn’t yet thrust captured a significant market share in the export market due to the traditional way of production which hardly meets the quality requirements of exotic markets as well as uncompetitive price.

Bees Wax

Beeswax has been exported since long ago with ranking forth in the volume of export the world over, still, the adulteration of beeswax is threatening its competitiveness in meeting quality standard. This sector has gained recognition as potential sector for contributing to the poverty reduction strategy of the country and foreign currency earning. The responsibility of the Ethiopia Apiculture Board (EAB) in brining this sector up to a competitive level wouldn’t be an easy avenue which justifies a strong capacity development intervention.
